The name of the Foundation, generously authorized by her descendants, honors the wife of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin. Emma, who came from a liberal background, was an educated woman who deliberately chose to remain in the shadow of her husband. Emma gave Charles unconditional support, in spite of her own convictions – As his wife,– she witnessed the great intellectual, moral, and physical dilemmas that Darwin faced while developing and presenting his revolutionary theory to the world.
